OCEANOGRAPHY AND MANAGEMENT OF THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Β18. MARINE POLLUTION

Marine pollution types:

  • (a) per pollutant: nutrients - eutrophication, metals, petroleum products, organic toxic compounds, organo-tin compounds, pharmaceuticals, radioactive isotopes,
  • (b) per source: urban, industrial, agricultural, from transportation etc,
  • (c) per sink: seawater, sediments, marine organisms, ecosystems,
  • (d) marine litter: solid wastes, plastics,
  • (e) microbial infection: pathogenic microorganisms, microbial indicators.

Impact – response to marine pollution:

  • (a) transport of pollutants to the marine environment and ecosystems,
  • (b) secondary pollutions,
  • (c) pollution impact on marine ecosystems and organisms, human health and marine resources,
  • (d) anti-polluting technologies,
  • (e) marine pollution legislation.

Marine pollution monitoring:

  • (a) planning of environmental monitoring systems,
  • (b) analytical techniques for pollutants determination in waters, sediments, biota, automatic monitoring/remote sensing systems, in situ measurements,
  • (c) indicators of the environmental state of sediments,
  • (d) bathing waters quality,
  • (e) water circulation – models of oil spills spread and solid wastes transport,
  • (f) treatment of results, statistical analysis.
